I have recently moved my accounts onto Xero. This is an online accounting system that has a lot of advantages over your standard programs. One obvious advantage is that it is accessible anywhere any time via the internet, a very good thing for me as I am often travelling.
Those that have done my courses or know how I work will know that having my finger on the pulse of things is very important to me. I like the fact that I can be in Timaru, Auckland, Wellington or at home and be able to log into my system and read my financial position. I can feed my bank statements directly into Xero and reconciling them is a very simple process. The program remembers regular transaction types so all that is required for most things is to click OK instead of having to reselect accounts and rewrite descriptions. It also automatically connects payments with invoices. You get to approve things before they are recorded so you still have the control and can catch anything that might be incorrect.
The reporting in Xero is good too. It provides you with easy to read reports and graphs. Another benefit of the program is that you can add a number of users with varying levels of access. This includes the ability to add your accountant as a user.
This system is the most user-friendly I have seen. I have been looking for a solution like this for a long time and am thrilled to now have it. We run Linux computers and New Zealand accounting systems are designed to run on Windows – this has meant that up until now I have had to run a dual-booting system with windows just so I can do my accounts. Just need to get my payroll sorted now and I can get rid of Windows altogether!! `
